Fun packed, adventure holidays by the sea are just part of what we provide at Youth Cancer Trust.
A vital part of our work is creating the opportunity for young cancer patients to meet and share their stories, creating lasting friendships and supporting each other through the hard times.
We’ve always been proud of how our guests generate a warm, friendly atmosphere as they meet each other, returning guests taking first timers under their wing and everyone embracing the open and accepting nature of our YCT family.
This was further demonstrated during lockdown, when one of our guests decided to create gift boxes to cheer up her peers.
Kind hearted Jade, put aside her own challenges and gathered donations to her doorstep, ordered online and sent out helpers to purchase treats. She made these into surprise packages and included a hand written uplifting message.
They were met with much delight and excitement from everyone that received one.
We also had our Youth Ambassador, Natalie, creating colourful homemade fabric masks and selling them online to raise donations for YCT. She also sent out some craft sets to some of the group. Natalie is a devoted supporter and friend of the charity as well as frequent guest. You can read more about Natalie and watch her video here.
Sadly, many of our guests are familiar with isolation, spending long periods in hospital or at home, protecting their vulnerable immune system by staying away from others, not being able to attend work, school or social events. But, this inspiring group of young people chose not to let lockdown get them down, instead encouraging and championing each other in an online support group, overseen by YCT staff. The private online group is a safe space for sharing and connection.
Staff have been posting useful links and advice on areas of concern for our guests and are on hand to support, encourage and signpost when additional help has been needed.
The support group has been filled with warmth, kindness and fun during the past few months, demonstrating once again the incredible determination and resilience of our brave young people.
